A Note from the Editor

Dear Readers,

Higher education is jumping in the social media pool in a big way. A recent poll by the social media site DIOSA showed that 87 percent of respondents said their institution had a Facebook page. Small wonder then that institutions such as Webster University, American University, and the University of Maryland at College Park, among others, are using social media to reach out to students, faculty and the public. Five Steps to Developing a Powerful Social Networking Strategy, by Fritz McDonald, takes a look at how colleges and universities can create web communities to build relationships of value with their most important constituents.

In an increasingly litigious society, colleges and universities are open to risks from all corners. Identifying the major risks that might lurk around campus—such as a broken sprinkler system in a residence hall—and then fixing them is the first step in mitigating risk. In Manageable Risk, Susan Gurevitz explains how an Enterprise Risk Management policy takes a holistic, comprehensive, organization-wide approach to identifying, mitigating, and—when necessary—responding to risk situations.

With today's uncertain economic picture, standardization is one way an institution can get a handle on technology expenditures, while improving the user experience. In Setting the Standard, Michele Herrmann tells how CIOs around the country are cutting costs, reducing maintenance issues, and "driving down complexity" with hardware and software that integrates easily.
