When it comes to adopting and implementing open educational resources, many struggle with identifying a place to begin. There are so many factors to consider-how will an OER or affordability initiative be funded? How will it be supported on-campus? How can faculty and administrators work together to help scale it? There are pit-stops all along the "open road". Why not travel it together? Intellus Learning has created a wealth of useful resources for those dedicated to OER in higher education--from infographics to webinars from OER community members--meant to illuminate the road ahead.
The Open road, as we've outlined it, speaks to many challenges institutions face when moving to OER adoption--starting with funding. Often, open educational resources are initially adopted as a way to save students money or offset the many other costs their students will accrue. Still, running an effective OER initiative to get these free resources into the hands of students in a meaningful and pedagogically-sound way takes time, energy, and money.
As one would expect, implementing an institutional OER initiative also takes planning, communication, and coordination across stakeholders, as well as the collaboration of faculty, staff, and administrators -- not to mention the additional challenges of developing curriculum from a wide pool of resources of varying quality. The payoff is high, though. With OER comes the flexibility meet students' unique needs, implement new pedagogical strategies, and improve student outcomes.
Awareness of OER in higher education, while increasing, is still low. Are faculty on your campus talking about Open Education Resources? Regardless of where you are on the Open road, we're here to help. Travel with Intellus Learning, and discover our growing library of OER thought-leadership resources here.
See you on the road,
Intellus Learning
