Appalachian State University (Boone, NC) sets an example in energy efficiency with a move to an all-LED Cree® lighting solution in its Plemmons Student Union.   The process of moving to more energy-efficient lighting in the student union began in 2005, but Dave Robertson, Director of Student Programs and the Plemmons Student Union, wasn't then yet sold on LED technology. CSUF's manager of commissioning and energy, Doug Kind, compared actual energy meters on the parking deck to an identical facility that is currently lit with fluorescents. The results were astounding — 80% less energy use than the fluorescent-lit structure. This great achievement was well below the state's Title 24 energy code requirements, resulting in nearly $120,000 in energy incentives from the local utility company.
